Fall Family Photos | What to Wear Outfit and Inspiration Style Guide

Yay! So you’ve decided to finally get some family photos done after putting it off for a while now. Your kiddos are growing so fast and you don’t want to regret not capturing these special memories!

With the weather and colors Fall is the most popular time to get family photos done!

You’ve booked your session but then you realize…what the heck are we going to wear?! To inspire you as you prepare for your family photo session, I have put together a little Fall outfit guide just for you!

Here is a quick step-by-step guide to help you look your best during your family photos!

1. CHOOSE THE LOCATION.

Before you even consider what outfits you want to wear, talk to your photographer about location options and what you most prefer. I personally have a location look book with photos for my clients so they can choose which location they’d like to use. The location will set the mood with your outfit choices and colors to wear.

2. ALWAYS PICK MOMS OUTFIT FIRST.

This is one of the best tips I can give! My recommendation is to start with mom, since us ladies are more picky about what we decide on wearing. My best advice is for you to wear a dress in your favorite color that flatters your features. Not only are dresses flattering, but you will feel good in it. If you hate dresses, think about a skirt/top combo, but choose something that is slightly dresser than your everyday look.

Once you decided on what mom wears then you can start choosing other styles and colors for the ret of the family.

3. CHOOSE A COLOR PALETTE.

After you’ve chosen mom’s outfit, think about 2-3 coordinating (not the same exact) colors, some neutral and one of which pops and brings life to the outfits. I always suggest to only have 1-2 patterns! I’ve created a Pinterest board with fall family photo outfit ideas! Go check it out!

4. THINK NEUTRAL TONES.

Instead of wearing a fire truck red color think along the lines of a maroon, or dusty mauve color. Instead of bright vivid colors you’ll want to tone down the saturation and think of a more neutral or muted tone of that color.

5. COORDINATE, DON’T MATCH.

Try and pick 2-3 colors and mix and match everyone in them. So lets pick navy, gray and cream. If mom wears a light gray dress, you can have dad in a navy button up with gray slacks or jeans, a little girl in a cream dress with and a little boy in jeans and a gray shirt.

6. ADD VISUAL INTEREST.

Add visual interest by adding demotion in your photos! You can add a pattern (avoid big patterns as this cause direction rather than interest), layers like jackets, vest, scarves, etc.

7. DRESS IT UP.

Add some fun items like a cute hat, jewelry, suspenders for little boys, a nice watch for dad and don’t forget adorable shoes!

And there you have it! These are my best tips for dressing your family this Fall season! I have also started an Amazon list of really cute Fall outfits (but remember always look at reviews before purchasing)!
